What is Body
Mass Index (BMI)?
The most commonly accepted measurement of overweight and obesity is the
Body Mass Index (BMI). BMI is a direct calculation based on
height and weight and is not gender-specific. Although it does
not directly measure percentage of body fat, it provides a more
valid and reliable measure of overweight and obesity than weight
alone.
Not all persons with a BMI of 30 or greater are obese; examples are very
muscular athletes who do not have excess body fat but who have
substantial weight due to muscle, which weighs more than fat.
